Playwrights & Performers: Samuel D. Hunter

Samuel D. Hunter is a New York City-based playwright. He is best know for his award winning plays The Whale (2013 Lucille Lortel Award, Best Play, 2013 Drama Desk Special Award for Significant Contribution to Theatre, 2013 GLAAD Media Award, Outstanding New York Theatre) and A Bright New Boise (2011 Obie Award for Playwriting).

We chat about his plays, including The Few, which opened last week at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in New York City and A Great Wilderness, which is about gay conversion therapy and premiered earlier this year at the Seattle Rep Theater; growing up in Moscow, Idaho; coming out while attending a Christian Fundamentalist high school; going to college in New York City; life as a working playwright; and his forthcoming play Pocatello coming to Playwright Horizons later this year and directed by Hunter’s frequent collaborator Davis McCallum. We also ponder what exactly is a “Broadway play?”
