Storyville – Location, Tickets, Reviews

The Storyville neighborhood in New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, so the legend goes.

Here we witness that legend through the eyes of Butch, an out-of-town trumpet player. He floats into Storyville to spread the love for his unique brand of music. But the residents of Storyville are apprehensive. They have their own beloved trumpeter, Hot Licks.

What the plot lacks (called “dramatically thin” by the New York Post and “flimsy” by Stage and Cinema), the music and talented actors and musicians more than make up for to produce a high energy, entertaining evening of New Orleans jazz-inspired theater.

Recommended for delighting tourists and entertaining friends.

REVIEWS

Stage and Cinema
Into this pat den of iniquity arrives Butch “Cobra” Brown (Kyle Robert Carter), a champion bare-knuckle boxer who’s hung up his knuckles for his true passion – playing the trumpet.

New York Post
Nawlins flavor on-key, but a note short on plot

Time Out New York
Broadway veteran Ernestine Jackson stars in Ed Bullins and Mildred Kayden’s musical, about the birth of jazz in the seedy saloons and brothels of New Orleans in the 1910s.

Woman Around Town
This spirited musical was born in 1977 and has been produced intermittently since, presumably with evolved tinkering. The York Theatre Company’s good looking, well directed and choreographed, evocatively orchestrated production can, however, only sugar coat its innate flaws.

Curtain Up
No amount of conjuring or cutting, however, is likely to turn this now two-hours and fifteen minute musical into a smash hit. It is, however, a consistently diverting entertainment.
