The Hive Theater presents the world premiere of A Brief History of the Soviet Union at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre. Don’t let that title deter you. It’s not as boring as it sounds. It’s actually billed as a comedy.
Written by Vladimir Zelevinsky, A Brief History of the Soviet Union is a series of short stories about ordinary people who ended up a part of an extraordinary history. Each story explores the theme of humanity under extreme conditions. Four actors play over twenty characters, mapping out some of the most pivotal moments in the history of the Soviet Union from the October Revolution of 1917 through its demise.
Maxamoo
The script is well versed and crafted with humor, sarcasm, and compassion. It starts and ends with Marissa Parness delivering effective monologues, first, from the perspective of a young woman witnessing the October Revolution and, then, a retrospect from a woman at age 100. All of the stories in between are self-contained. They are variously farcical, chilling, and heartfelt. Together they make a strong collection that covers many aspects of life in the Soviet Union. While the play is rife with buffoonery, it addresses morality, friendship, and love with sincerity.

- You like plays with historic themes;
- You enjoy Russian literature (although that’s not required to appreciate this show);
- You’re looking for a good mix of levity, sarcasm, and the highs and lows of humanity.

Theater Pizzazz
Although it’s not as buoyant as sketch comedy, it has moments of great levity. Long speeches about kindness and morality are truly heartfelt.
Talkin’ Broadway
A Brief History of the Soviet Union is not entirely successful, the potential is great for both the play (please consider revising, Mr. Zelevinsky) and for the troupe.
