The House – Location, Tickets, Reviews

After appearing in over 30 international festivals and venues all over Europe, The House, a puppet, comedy, thriller created and performed by Danish puppeteer Sofie Krog and Spanish artist David Faraco, is now in New York City for a 5-day limited engagement at HERE Arts Center. The House is billed as appropriate for adults and children 10+.

The house in The House is a funeral home. Mrs. Esperanza, her nephew and heir Henry, and Henry’s wife Flora, all live in the house. When Mrs. Esperanza decides to change her will and leave the house to her sons, Flora overhears the plan and takes drastic action, which leads to a series of crimes and surprising twists.

The House starts off with a spooky tone and effortlessly maintains a sense of suspense throughout the show. Brutal crimes occur but they are subtly depicted and your imagination is left to fill in what the puppets, waving axes and dismembered limbs, leave out. The House is also rife with cartoon-like buffoonery. Each gripping moment is followed by a hilarious twist.

The seven puppets, each with a distinct voice, characteristic mannerisms, and individualized nuance, are brought to life effortlessly by just two puppeteers. The eponymous house emerges from a beautifully designed revolving set. It is a marvel.

Recommended . . .

  • If you enjoy a thriller that is exhilarating and filled with humor;
  • Whether or not you love puppetry; and
  • If you dig innovative set design with intricate, beautiful detailing.
Public Opinion

The performance we attended was sold out. Judging from the gasps, enthusiastic laughter, occasional “aww”, and full ovation, it’s going to be very popular.
