The Public Theater presents the New York premiere of A Second Chance, a musical written by Ted Shen (book, lyrics, and music). It is Shen’s musical debut after a 30-year business career. A Second Chance is directed by Jonathan Butterell, and stars real-life husband and wife Brian and Diane Sutherland.
Based on the story of how Shen and his wife met, the two-person musical traces the romance of Dan, a recent widower who is still in mourning, and Jenna, a divorcée. The two have very different personalities. He is solemn, while she cheerful. They meet at a mutual friend’s party, fall for each other, and tentatively look for a second chance of love.

A Second Chance is a simple love story that follows a rather conventional narrative of two people meeting and taking a chance on falling in love. It is not rife with drama or deep concepts. It offers a melancholy-free experience of pleasant, if contrived, music with lyrics that are occasionally clunky.
The show is staged in The Public Theater’s small Shiva Theater. It has a minimal set and uses photo projections on three sides of the stage to create different scenes in a space that is intimate and meditative. It is mostly sung through by the two performers, accompanied by a live five-piece ensemble. The duo’s performances are infused with passion and warmth and the genuine affection they show to each other is sweet and contagious.
