Visitations: “Theotokia” And “The War Reporter” – Location, Tickets, Reviews
PROTOTYPE festival presents the New York premiere of Visitations: “Theotokia” And “The War Reporter”, a double bill of one-act chamber operas by composer Jonathan Berger and librettist Dan O’Brien.
The two pieces share the common theme of auditory hallucinations. Theotokia looks at the consciousness of a man who is plagued by his inner voice and taunted by the mother of God. The War Reporter is based on the true story of photojournalist Paul Watson, who won the Pulitzer Prize for a photo of the mutilated body of an American soldier and has been haunted ever since. The librettist, O’Brien, published a book of poetry, also called The War Reporter, about Watson and his story.

Although Visitations contains two separate pieces, both are simple and straightforward with minimalist settings. Theotokia projects a lean beauty that is bleak and eerie. The War Reporter is poetic and stirring. Mellissa Hughes, the soprano in Theotokia, has a vibrant voice that captures the intensity and fluidity of the mother figure. Baritone Christopher Dylan Herbert’s amazing singing in The War Reporter is just as impressive. If you want to know more about PROTOTYPE but don’t know where to start, or you love elegant operas that give you goosebumps while simultaneously offering a chance for contemplation, Visitations will satisfy both interests.
Public Opinion
The audience loved the performance we saw and gave a rousing ovation but time is running out to see it. There are only three performances of Vistations at PROTOTYPE and the last performance is Monday, January 13, 2014.
